About me / Bio:
Heitor Villa-Lobos was one of the most influential and innovative composers of the 20th century, who blended Brazilian folk music with Western classical music to create a distinctive and original style. He was born in Rio de Janeiro, where he learned music from his father, an amateur musician and librarian. He also taught himself to play various instruments, such as cello, clarinet, and guitar. He began composing at an early age, influenced by the street music and popular culture of his native city. He also traveled extensively throughout Brazil, collecting and studying the musical traditions of different regions and ethnic groups. He incorporated these elements into his compositions, which often reflected the diversity and richness of Brazilian culture and nature. Villa-Lobos was largely self-taught as a composer, and did not follow any formal school or method. He developed his own musical language, which was sometimes complex and experimental, but also lyrical and expressive. He wrote over 2,000 works, ranging from solo pieces to symphonies, from chamber music to operas, from choral works to ballets. He was especially prolific in writing for the guitar, which he considered the national instrument of Brazil. He composed 12 etudes and 5 preludes for the guitar, which are considered masterpieces of the repertoire. He also wrote several works for guitar and orchestra, such as the Concerto for Guitar and Small Orchestra (1951). One of his most famous and original works is the Bachianas Brasileiras, a series of nine suites that combine elements of Brazilian folk music and Baroque music, especially the style of Johann Sebastian Bach. Each suite is scored for a different combination of instruments or voices, and explores various aspects of Brazilian music, such as rhythms, melodies, harmonies, and forms. The most popular of these suites is the Bachianas Brasileiras No. 5, for soprano and eight cellos, which includes the famous Aria (Cantilena), a haunting and beautiful melody that evokes the nocturnal sounds of the Brazilian forest. Villa-Lobos was also a prominent figure in the musical education and cultural life of Brazil. He founded and directed several institutions and projects that aimed to promote and disseminate Brazilian music, such as the Academia Brasileira de Música, the Semana de Música Viva, and the Guia Prático. He also composed many works for children and amateurs, such as the Baby's Family, a collection of piano pieces that depict various games and toys, and the Canto Orfeônico, a method of choral singing that was adopted by many schools and communities. Villa-Lobos died in Rio de Janeiro in 1959, at the age of 72. He was widely recognized and honored as one of the greatest composers of his time, and as a national hero of Brazil. His music continues to be performed and appreciated all over the world, and has influenced many other composers and musicians, such as Antônio Carlos Jobim, João Gilberto, and Astor Piazzolla. He is regarded as the single most significant creative figure in 20th-century Brazilian art music.
