About me / Bio:
Lo Hsiang-lin was a Chinese historian and educator who specialized in the study of Hakka language and culture. He was born in Xingning, Guangdong province, into a family of tea merchants. He received his education at Xingmin middle school, Tsinghua University, and Yenching University. He was involved in various academic and cultural institutions, such as the Yenching Research Institute of Ancient Chinese Culture, the National Sun Yat-sen University, the National Central University, the Sun Yat-sen Library, and the Hong Kong University. He was also a founding member of the International Association of Culinary Professionals and a church leader of the Hong Kong Tsung Tsin Mission. Lo Hsiang-lin was one of the most renowned researchers in Hakka language and culture. His pioneering research in Hakka genealogy showed that the Hakka are Han Chinese. He published several books and articles on the history, culture, and cuisine of the Hakka people, such as Introduction to the Study of Hakka, History of Chinese Nationalities, and Classic Food of China. He also contributed to the study of local chronicles, Sun Yat-sen's family lineage, and Hong Kong's cultural interchange. He was widely respected and admired by his peers and students for his scholarship, charm, and humor. Lo Hsiang-lin died of cancer in London on 20 April, 1978. He left behind a rich legacy of books, articles, and lectures, as well as a collection of cookware, utensils, and manuscripts, which are now housed at the Bodleian Library of Oxford University.
