About me / Bio:

Yao Tongbin was a Chinese scientist and one of China's foremost missile engineers. He graduated from the department of metallurgy of National Tangshan Engineering College in 1945, and obtained a doctorate of foundry engineering from University of Birmingham in UK in 1951. He also studied at the Royal School of Mines, Imperial College London, and the RWTH Aachen University in Germany. He returned to China in 1957 and served in the Fifth Academy of the Ministry of National Defense, headed by Qian Xuesen. He helped found the Institute of Materials and Technology and became the director. He made significant contributions to China's astronautical materials and technology, especially in the fields of high-temperature alloys, heat-resistant coatings, and solid propellants. He was involved in the development of China's first atomic bomb, hydrogen bomb, and artificial satellite. He was also a member of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and the Chinese Society of Metals. He was beaten to death at his own home by members of a rival faction during the Cultural Revolution in 1968. He was posthumously awarded the Two Bombs, One Satellite Meritorious Award in 1999 by the Chinese government, and officially recognized as a "martyr" within China.
