Chang Chia gwe

Chang Chia-gwe was a Chinese athlete who competed in the men's long jump and the men's triple jump at the 1936 Summer Olympics in Berlin. He was the first Chinese athlete to participate in the Olympic long jump, and the first Chinese athlete to compete in two track and field events at the same Olympics. He was also the first Chinese athlete to wear the national flag on his chest at the Olympics. Chang Chia-gwe was born on May 23, 1915, in Wuxi, Jiangsu, China. He attended the Peizheng (Pui Ching) Middle School and later the Lingnan University, an art school, which had to move to Hong Kong after the Japanese invasion in 1938. He started to practice athletics at the age of 16, and showed great talent and potential. He won several national championships and set national records in long jump and triple jump. He qualified for the 1936 Olympics by winning the long jump and the triple jump at the Far Eastern Championship Games in Manila, Philippines, in 1934. He was one of the four Chinese athletes to represent China at the 1936 Olympics, along with two sprinters and a high jumper. He traveled to Berlin by boat and train, and faced many difficulties and challenges. He had to deal with the unfamiliar weather, food, and culture. He also had to cope with the Nazi propaganda and the racial discrimination.
