Willie Fung was born on March 3, 1896, in Canton, China. His father had studied in Japan, and his mother was from Suzhou. He moved to San Francisco with his family when he was young, and made a name for himself as an actor on the stage. After moving to Los Angeles after his uncle's peanut business collapsed during the depression, he made his film debut in 1922 in Hurricane's Gal. The majority of his roles were in Westerns and dramas. He often played Japanese characters, as many Chinese actors working in Hollywood during the era did. He was the personification of the 'Yellow Peril', with his buck-toothed, pigtailed, pidgin-English-spouting comedy relief. Behind the scenes, he was an advocate for fair treatment of studio actors. He also ran his own Chinese restaurant: New Moon Café in East Hollywood. He was reportedly an acquaintance of Jean Harlow. He died of a coronary occlusion in Los Angeles on April 16, 1945, at the age of 49. He is buried in Angelus-Rosedale Cemetery in Los Angeles.
