About me / Bio:
Princess Olga was a Greek princess who married Prince Paul, Regent of the Kingdom of Yugoslavia. She was born in 1903 as the granddaughter of King George I of Greece and a cousin of King George VI of the United Kingdom. She was educated in England and Switzerland, and had a brief engagement to Crown Prince Frederick of Denmark in 1922. She married Prince Paul of Yugoslavia in 1923 and became the mother of three children. She was known for her beauty, elegance, and intelligence, as well as her interest in art, literature, and music. She accompanied her husband on his official duties as regent for his cousin King Peter II, who was a minor when his father King Alexander I was assassinated in 1934. She also acted as the first lady of Yugoslavia and worked to promote cultural and humanitarian causes. She founded the Red Cross of Yugoslavia and supported various charities, schools, and hospitals. She was also involved in the preservation of Serbian heritage and monuments. She was well respected by the Yugoslav people and admired by foreign dignitaries. However, her life changed dramatically when her husband signed the Tripartite Pact with Nazi Germany and Italy in 1941, which led to a coup d'état by pro-Allied officers who deposed him and restored King Peter II to the throne. Olga and her family were arrested by the British forces and exiled to Egypt, Kenya, and South Africa for the duration of the Second World War. They were not allowed to return to Europe until 1948, when they settled in Paris. Olga lived in Paris for the rest of her life, where she devoted herself to her family and friends. She also maintained contact with her relatives in Greece and Britain, especially her sister Princess Marina, Duchess of Kent. She suffered from Alzheimer's disease in her later years and died in 1997 at the age of 94. Her remains were initially buried at the Bois-de-Vaux Cemetery in Lausanne, Switzerland, but were transferred to the royal mausoleum of Oplenac, Serbia, in 2012 by the request of her son Prince Alexander.
