Bert Kaempfert was a German orchestra leader, multi-instrumentalist, music producer, arranger, and composer. He started his musical career at the age of 15, playing accordion, clarinet, piano, and saxophone in various bands. He served in the German Navy during World War II and was captured by the British in 1945. He formed a prisoner-of-war band and entertained the Allied troops. After the war, he returned to Hamburg and worked as an arranger and producer for various artists. He also formed his own big band and recorded several instrumental albums in the easy listening and jazz genres. He wrote the music for many well-known songs, such as "Strangers in the Night", "Spanish Eyes", "Danke Schoen", and "L-O-V-E". He also discovered and hired the Beatles to back Tony Sheridan on an album called My Bonnie in 1961. He won several awards and honors for his music, including a Grammy Award, a Golden Globe Award, and a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. He died of a stroke in Mallorca, Spain in 1980 at the age of 56. He is regarded as one of the most successful German composers and musicians of all time.
