Raoul Coutard was a French cinematographer who worked with some of the most influential directors of the French New Wave, such as Jean-Luc Godard, François Truffaut, and Jacques Demy. He was known for his unconventional and experimental use of natural light, handheld camera, and fast film stock, which gave his films a raw and realistic quality. He also experimented with color and widescreen formats, creating striking and vivid images. He collaborated with Godard on many of his classic films, such as Breathless (1960), A Woman Is a Woman (1961), Vivre sa vie (1962), Bande à part (1964), Alphaville (1965), Pierrot le Fou (1965), and Weekend (1967). He also shot Truffaut's Shoot the Piano Player (1960) and Jules and Jim (1962), as well as Demy's Lola (1961) and Bay of Angels (1963). He also directed one feature film, Hoa Binh (1970), which was nominated for the Palme d'Or at Cannes. He won the César Award for Best Cinematography for Le Crabe-Tambour (1977). He died in 2016 at the age of 92 after a long illness. He is widely regarded as one of the greatest cinematographers of all time and a pioneer of modern cinema.
