About me / Bio:
Harold Wilson was a British statesman and Labour politician who served as Prime Minister of the United Kingdom twice, from October 1964 to June 1970 and again from March 1974 to April 1976. He was born on March 11, 1916, in Huddersfield, Yorkshire, to a chemist and a teacher. He studied Modern History at Oxford University, where he graduated with a first class degree. He then became a lecturer in economics and joined the Labour Party. During World War II, he worked as a civil servant and a statistician. He was elected as a Member of Parliament for Ormskirk in 1945, and later for Huyton. He held various ministerial positions under Clement Attlee, including President of the Board of Trade. He became the Leader of the Labour Party in 1963, after the death of Hugh Gaitskell. He led the party to victory in the 1964 general election, ending 13 years of Conservative rule. As Prime Minister, he pursued a social democratic agenda that included the creation of the Open University, the abolition of death penalty and decriminalisation of homosexuality in Britain, the introduction of comprehensive education and decimal currency, and the nationalisation of some industries. He also faced several challenges, such as the devaluation of the pound, trade union disputes, the Vietnam War, and the Rhodesian crisis. He won another election in 1966, but lost to Edward Heath in 1970. He remained as Leader of the Opposition until 1974, when he returned to power after a hung parliament. His second term was marked by economic difficulties, such as inflation, unemployment, and oil crisis. He also held a referendum on Britain's membership in the European Economic Community, which resulted in a majority vote to remain. He surprised many by resigning as Prime Minister and Leader of the Labour Party in 1976, citing personal reasons. He was succeeded by James Callaghan. He was made a life peer as Baron Wilson of Rievaulx in 1983. He wrote several books on his political career and memoirs. He suffered from colon cancer and Alzheimer's disease in his later years. He died on May 24, 1995, at the age of 79. He was buried at St Mary's Old Church on the Isles of Scilly, where he often spent his holidays.
