About me / Bio:
Elvis Presley was one of the most influential and popular singers and actors of the 20th century. He was born in a poor family in Tupelo, Mississippi, and moved to Memphis, Tennessee, when he was 13. He began his music career in 1954, recording at Sun Records with producer Sam Phillips, who wanted to bring the sound of African-American music to a wider audience. Presley was a pioneer of rockabilly, a fusion of country music and rhythm and blues, and had his first hit with “Heartbreak Hotel” in 1956. He soon became a sensation among young people, who admired his charismatic voice, energetic style, and rebellious attitude. He also faced controversy for his sexually provocative performances and his promotion of the then-marginalized sound of African Americans12 Presley also pursued a career in Hollywood, making his film debut in Love Me Tender in 1956. He starred in 31 feature films and two concert documentaries, mostly musical comedies and dramas. Some of his most famous films include Jailhouse Rock (1957), King Creole (1958), Blue Hawaii (1961), Viva Las Vegas (1964), and Elvis: That’s the Way It Is (1970). His movies were commercially successful but critically derided, and he often expressed dissatisfaction with the quality of his scripts and roles. He also served in the U.S. Army from 1958 to 1960, which interrupted his music and film career12 In 1968, after a seven-year hiatus from live performances, Presley returned to the stage with a televised comeback special that showcased his musical talents and charisma. He then embarked on a series of concerts in Las Vegas and across the U.S., drawing huge crowds of fans and breaking box-office records. He also recorded some of his best albums in this period, such as From Elvis in Memphis (1969), Elvis Country (1971), and Aloha from Hawaii Via Satellite (1973), which was the first concert by a solo artist to be broadcast around the world. He experimented with different genres of music, such as gospel, soul, country, and pop, and won three Grammy Awards for his gospel recordings12 Presley’s personal life was also turbulent and troubled. He married Priscilla Beaulieu in 1967, after a seven-year courtship that began when she was 14. They had one daughter, Lisa Marie Presley, in 1968. They divorced in 1973, amid Presley’s infidelities and drug abuse. Presley also suffered from various health problems, such as high blood pressure, glaucoma, liver damage, and obesity. He became addicted to prescription drugs, which affected his physical and mental state. He died of a heart attack at his Graceland mansion in Memphis, Tennessee, on August 16, 1977, at the age of 42. His death was mourned by millions of fans around the world, who still celebrate his legacy and achievements12
