Roald Dahl

Roald Dahl was born in 1916 in Wales to Norwegian immigrant parents. He attended boarding schools in England and excelled in sports and literature. He joined the Royal Air Force during World War II and became a fighter pilot and an intelligence officer. He began his writing career in the 1940s with works for both children and adults. He is best known for his imaginative and irreverent children’s books, such as James and the Giant Peach, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Matilda, The Witches, Fantastic Mr Fox, The BFG, The Twits, and George’s Marvellous Medicine. His books often feature villainous adults, kind-hearted children, and elements of fantasy, humour, and adventure. He also wrote short stories that are known for their unexpected endings and dark comedy. Some of his stories have been adapted into the television series Tales of the Unexpected. He also wrote screenplays for films such as Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, You Only Live Twice, and Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory. He received many awards for his contribution to literature, including the World Fantasy Award for Life Achievement and the Children’s Author of the Year in 1990.
