About me / Bio:
Elena Moldovan Popoviciu was a Romanian mathematician known for her work in functional analysis, particularly in generalizations of the concept of a convex function. She was a winner of the Simion Stoilow Prize in mathematics. Born in Cluj, Romania, to Ioan Moldovan and Rozalia, she showed early talents in various fields including mathematics, painting, music, and literature. After earning her bachelor's degree in mathematics in 1947, she began her career as a schoolteacher before pursuing doctoral studies. Her significant contributions to mathematics include her work on interpolating functions and the notion of convex functions, which formed the basis of her research throughout her career. She married mathematician Tiberiu Popoviciu in 1964 and supervised the Ph.D. thesis of 23 students. She passed away in Cluj-Napoca on June 24, 2009.
