He graduated with a degree in biology from Chulalongkorn University in 1953 and worked as a zoologist before becoming the curator at the Thai National Reference Collection. His notable work includes the discovery of the Kitti's hog-nosed bat, the smallest species of bat and the smallest mammal in the world, and the white-eyed river martin. Thonglongya's dedication to his field was abruptly cut short when he died from a heart attack on February 12, 1974.
