Louis-Hippolyte Lafontaine was a notable Canadian politician, born on October 4, 1807, in Boucherville, Lower Canada. He was the first Premier of the United Province of Canada and a key figure in the establishment of responsible government in Canada. Lafontaine was a lawyer by profession and began his political career in the Legislative Assembly of Lower Canada in 1830. He was a supporter of Papineau and the Parti canadien (later the Parti patriote). After the Rebellions of 1837, he advocated for political reforms within the Union regime of 1841. Alongside Robert Baldwin, he formed a government in 1842 and again in 1848, which battled for the restoration of the official status of the French language and the principles of responsible government. His government also passed bills to abolish the tenure seigneuriale and grant amnesty to the leaders of the rebellions in Lower Canada. Lafontaine retired from politics in 1851 and was appointed Chief Justice of Canada East in 1853. He was created a baronet by Queen Victoria in 1854 and a knight commander in the pontifical Order of St. Sylvester by Pope Pius IX in 1855.
