About me / Bio:
Billy Bishop was a Canadian flying ace who shot down 72 German aircraft during the First World War. He was officially credited with more victories than any other pilot from the British Empire and also received a Victoria Cross. He was born in Owen Sound, Ontario, Canada in 1894. He attended the Royal Military College of Canada and joined the Canadian cavalry at the start of the war. He transferred to the Royal Flying Corps in 1915 and became a fighter pilot in 1916. He soon proved his skill and courage in aerial combat, earning the nickname "The Lone Hawk". He was awarded the Military Cross for his first five victories and the Distinguished Service Order for his next 16. On 2 June 1917, he performed a daring solo raid on a German airfield, destroying three enemy planes on the ground and another in the air. For this feat, he was awarded the Victoria Cross, the highest military honour in the British Empire. He was also promoted to major and given command of No. 85 Squadron. He continued to rack up victories until the end of the war, when he returned to Canada as a national hero. He wrote a memoir titled Winged Warfare and a book of anecdotes called Flying Squad. During the Second World War, he played an important role in recruiting for the Royal Canadian Air Force and promoting the British Commonwealth Air Training Plan. He also served as the honorary air vice-marshal of the RCAF. He died of heart failure in 1956 and was buried in his hometown of Owen Sound. He was honoured by the Canadian government with a commemorative stamp in 1968 and by the Canadian Aviation Hall of Fame in 1974.
