Alfred John Scow was a Canadian lawyer and judge who was the first Aboriginal person to graduate from a BC law school, the first Aboriginal lawyer called to the BC bar and the first Aboriginal legally trained judge appointed to the BC Provincial Court. He was born in Alert Bay, British Columbia, in April 1927 and belonged to the Kwicksutaineuk-ah-kwa-mish First Nation. He attended UBC where he completed 3 years of his undergraduate degree and obtained an LLB degree in 1961. He worked as a city prosecutor, a chair of the board of review for the Workmen's Compensation Board, and a member of the Amerindian Lands Commission in Guyana. He was appointed to the Provincial Court of BC in 1971 and served until his retirement in 1992. He received numerous awards and honors, including the UBC Great Trekker Award, Aboriginal Achievement awards, a UBC Honorary Doctor of Laws Degree in 1997, the Order of Canada in 2000, and the Order of BC in 2004. He was also a hereditary chief of the Kwikwasutinuxw of the Kwakwaka'wakw people. He was a founding member of the Elders Committee for the First Nations House of Learning at UBC and the Scow Institute, which promotes a greater understanding between Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal people. He died in February 2013 at the age of 85. He is remembered as a humble and caring person who inspired others to pursue their dreams and achieve their potential.
