Ramiz Alia was an Albanian politician who served as the second and last leader of the People's Socialist Republic of Albania from 1985 to 1991, and as the first leader of the Republic of Albania from 1991 to 1992. He was also the head of the communist Party of Labour of Albania from 1985 to 1991, and the head of the Socialist Party of Albania from 1991 to 1992. He was born in Shkodër in 1925 to Muslim parents who had fled from persecution in Yugoslavia. He joined the Albanian Communist Youth Organisation in 1941 and became a member of the Albanian Communist Party in 1943. He rose rapidly under Enver Hoxha's patronage and became a member of the Central Committee in 1948 and a candidate member of the Politburo in 1956. He was elected a full member of the Politburo and a member of the Secretariat in 1961. He was the chief ideologist of the party and led campaigns to purge the artistic and intellectual communities of "bourgeois humanism" and other "alien influences". He became the president of the People's Assembly in 1982 and the first secretary of the party in 1985, after Hoxha's death. He tried to introduce some reforms and open up the country to the outside world, but faced resistance from hardliners and opposition from pro-democracy movements. He resigned as the party leader in 1991 and as the president in 1992, after losing the first multiparty elections in Albania. He was later arrested and tried for crimes against humanity, but was acquitted in 1996. He died in Tirana in 2011, at the age of 85.
