Rafiq Subaie

Rafiq Subaie was a Syrian actor, writer and director who contributed to the Syrian drama for more than five decades. He was born in one of the oldest districts of old Damascus and started his artistic career in 1967 with the comedy series "Makalib Ghawar". He became famous for his role as Abu Sayyah, a witty and sarcastic character who appeared in many plays and TV series. He also acted in several Syrian films, such as "A Memory of a Night of Love" (1973), where he co-starred with the Egyptian actor Salah Zulfikar. He wrote and directed some of his own works, such as "The Last Laugh" (1981) and "The Last Days of a City" (1985). He was awarded the Syrian Order of Merit of the first class in 2008 for his artistic achievements. He died on 5 January 2017 at the age of 86 in Damascus.
