Viggo Brun was a Norwegian mathematician who made significant contributions to number theory, especially on additive problems such as Goldbach's conjecture and the twin prime conjecture. He introduced a new method, based on Legendre's version of the sieve of Eratosthenes, now known as the Brun sieve, which he used to prove several results on the distribution of primes and almost primes. He also showed that the sum of the reciprocals of twin primes converges to a finite value, now called Brun's constant. He developed a multi-dimensional continued fraction algorithm and applied it to problems in musical theory. He was a professor at the Technical University in Trondheim and the University of Oslo, and served as the president of the Royal Norwegian Society of Sciences and Letters. He was awarded the Fridtjof Nansen Prize for Outstanding Research in 1955. He died in 1978 at the age of 92.
