Carl Hogset

Carl Halvor Høgset was a Norwegian lecturer, musician and choral conductor. He was born on November 3, 1941 in Oslo, Norway. He studied language and musicology at the University of Oslo, and voice and choral conducting at the Norwegian Academy of Music. He was a student of the composer Knut Nystedt. He founded the chamber choir Grex Vocalis in 1971, and conducted it until it was disbanded in 2019. He also conducted the Norwegian Student Choral Society, the Norwegian Youth Choir, Schola Cantorum, and other choirs. He was a singer himself, and released several solo recordings of songs by Henry Purcell, Georg Friedrich Händel, Edvard Grieg and Arne Nordheim. He taught both in state schools and the Norwegian Academy of Music, and ran courses and seminars for choir singers in Norway and abroad. He received several awards and honors for his contribution to Norwegian music, including the Royal Norwegian Order of Saint Olav, the international choir prize "Una Vita Per La Direzione Corale", and honorary memberships in various choir associations. He died of cancer on June 2, 2021 in Oslo, Norway. He is survived by his son Rasmus Høgset, who is also a singer and musician.
