Tryggve Andersen

Tryggve Andersen was a prominent figure in Norwegian literature at the turn of the 20th century. He was influenced by German Romanticism and Symbolism, and he portrayed the conflict between the bureaucratic and peasant cultures in his works. He also helped revive the Dano-Norwegian literary tradition, which had been overshadowed by the New Norwegian movement. He made his literary debut in 1897 with I Cancelliraadens dage, a collection of tales from the early 1800s in the Norwegian Uplands. It was received with great enthusiasm and earned him an endowment. He also wrote poetry, such as Digte (1898), and another novel, Mot kvæld (1900). He published five more collections of narratives and novels between 1904 and 1919, including Gamle folk og andre fortællinger (1904), Bispesønnen og andre fortellinger (1907), Hjemfærd (1913), and Fabler og hændelser (1915). He also wrote a diary of a sea voyage after the death of his first wife and a son in 1902, Dagbog fra en sjøreise (1923). Andersen suffered from various health problems, such as melancholy, depression, and epilepsy. He died in Gran in 1920. He was married three times and had no children.
