About me / Bio:
Amar Singh Chamkila was a famous Punjabi folk singer and songwriter who is considered one of the best and most influential singers of the Punjabi music industry. He was born in Dugri, Ludhiana, Punjab, India to a Ravidasia Sikh family. He showed his musical talent from a young age and learned to play the harmonium and dholki. He started his singing career at the age of 18 in 1979, when he approached Surinder Shinda, a renowned Punjabi singer, and became his protege. He adopted the stage name Amar Singh Chamkila, which means "one who glitters". He sang for many Punjabi films and albums, and also wrote songs for other singers. He was famous for his live stage performances, which attracted huge crowds of fans. He sang in a unique style, which blended folk music with modern beats and lyrics. He sang about various aspects of Punjabi culture and society, such as love, marriage, sexuality, drugs, alcohol, and politics. His songs were often considered controversial and vulgar by some people, but they also reflected the reality and sentiments of the common people. He received many threats from religious and political groups, who wanted him to stop singing, but he did not give up his passion. He was married to Amarjot Kaur, who was also his co-singer and partner on stage. They had a successful and popular musical duo, and sang many hit songs together. He died along with his wife and two other members of his band, when they were shot by unknown assailants on 8 March 1988, in Mehsampur, Jalandhar, Punjab. His murder remains unsolved till date. He is widely regarded as a legend and an icon of Punjabi music, and his songs are still played and enjoyed by millions of people.
