Edmund Piatkowski

Edmund Piątkowski was a Polish track and field athlete, who competed in the discus event. He was one of the leading discus throwers in the world in the 1950s and 1960s. He participated in four European Championships and three Olympic Games, winning the gold medal at the 1958 European Championships in Stockholm. He also set the world record in 1959 with a throw of 59.91 meters, which stood for over a year. He was a 14-time Polish champion and a two-time European record holder in the discus. He was married to Maria Piątkowska, an Olympic sprinter, and they had two sons. He was voted the best Polish athlete of 1959 by Przegląd Sportowy. He was awarded the Officer's Cross of the Order of Polonia Restituta in 1999 for his achievements and contributions to Polish athletics. He died in 2016 at the age of 80.
