Joe Erico

Joe Erico was born on November 20, 1948 in Odukpani, Cross River State. He started his football career as a goalkeeper for Electricity Connectors of Nigeria (ECN) and later played for the Nigerian national team, then known as the Green Eagles. He made his debut for Nigeria in a 1973 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier against Zambia and was part of the squad that won the bronze medal at the 1976 edition in Ethiopia. He was nicknamed 'Jogo Bonito' (meaning 'Beautiful Game' in Portuguese) by his fans for his style of play and his advocacy of attractive football. After his playing career, he became a coach and worked with various clubs, including Julius Berger, NEPA and Gabros. He also served as an assistant coach to the Super Eagles on several occasions, most notably during the 2002 FIFA World Cup and Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers, where he helped Nigeria secure a spot in both tournaments. He was known for his charisma, passion and dedication to the game. He died on January 21, 2021 in Lagos after complaining of a minor stomach ache. He was survived by his wife, Doris, and his three children, Ogaga, Onome and Omamuzo. He was buried at his residence in Lagos on January 26, 2021.
