Oba Sir Musendiku Buraimoh Adeniji Adele II

Oba Sir Musendiku Buraimoh Adeniji Adele II was the 20th Oba of Lagos, who reigned from 1949 to 1964. He was born in Lagos in 1893 to Buraimoh Adele and Moriamo Lalugbi. His grandfather was Oba Adele Ajosun. He studied at Holy Trinity Primary School and CMS Grammar School in Lagos. He joined the colonial service as a trainee surveyor and later worked as a land surveyor and a chief clerk in the treasury department. He served with the Cameroon Expeditionary Force during World War I. He was also a supporter of the Nigerian Youth Movement and a member of Egbe Omo Oduduwa led by Obafemi Awolowo. He faced legal challenges from the NNDP, who opposed his ascension to the throne, but his right was upheld by the Privy Council in 1957. He was awarded the titles of Commander of the Order of the British Empire (1956) and Knight of the Order of the British Empire (1962) by the Queen of the United Kingdom. He died in Lagos in 1964 and was buried at Iga Idunganran, his palace. He was succeeded by Oba Adeyinka Oyekan. He is credited with building the Lagos City Hall, a prominent landmark in the city.
