Remi Oyo

Remi Oyo was a Nigerian veteran journalist who served as the senior special assistant on media and publicity to President Olusegun Obasanjo from 2003 to 2007. She was also the managing director of the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) from 2007 to 2013, where she introduced digital news delivery and improved the security of news dissemination. She was the first woman to be the principal editor at NAN, the first woman to be the president of the Nigerian Guild of Editors, and the first woman to be the presidential spokesperson. She was also a fellow of the Nigerian Institute of Management, the Institute of Public Administration of Nigeria, and the Nigerian Institute of Journalism. She was awarded the national honour of Officer of the Order of the Niger (OON) by President Obasanjo in 2006. She was married to Vincent Oyo, a BBC-trained journalist, and had two children and three grandchildren. She died of cancer in the United Kingdom on October 1, 2014, at the age of 61. She was widely regarded as a dedicated, amiable, and professional media guru who broke the glass ceiling in the Nigerian media landscape.
