About me / Bio:
Hugh Leonard was an Irish dramatist, television writer, and essayist. He was born in Dublin as John Joseph Byrne, but was put up for adoption and raised by a couple in Dalkey, a suburb of Dublin. He changed his name to John Keyes Byrne and later adopted the pen name of Hugh Leonard. He wrote nearly 30 full-length plays, 10 one-act plays, three volumes of essays, two autobiographies, three novels, and a regular newspaper column. He also wrote extensively for television, including original plays, comedies, thrillers, and adaptations of classic novels. He won the Prix Italia in 1967 for his teleplay Silent Song, based on a short story by Frank O'Connor. He also wrote the script for the RTÉ adaptation of Strumpet City by James Plunkett. Three of his plays were presented on Broadway: The Au Pair Man, Da, and A Life. Da was the most successful, winning both a Tony Award and a Drama Desk Award for Best Play in 1978. It was also made into a film in 1988, starring Martin Sheen and Barnard Hughes. Leonard was known for his witty and satirical style, often using Ireland as a microcosm for larger issues. He was also a critic of Catholicism and politics in his country. He died in 2009 from lung cancer, aged 82.
