George Brent

George Brent was an Irish-American stage, film, and television actor who moved to the United States in 1921. He became involved with the Abbey Theatre in Dublin and later joined the IRA during the Irish War of Independence. He fled to England and then Canada to escape the British authorities. He made his Broadway debut in 1927 and his Hollywood debut in 1930. He was best known for his roles as a dapper, sophisticated gentleman who co-starred with some of the most popular actresses of his time, such as Greta Garbo, Barbara Stanwyck, and Bette Davis. He appeared in 11 films with Davis, including Jezebel, Dark Victory, and The Great Lie. He also starred in dramas, thrillers, and B-movies, such as The Spiral Staircase, The Rains Came, and Montana Belle. He retired from acting in 1960, but made a brief comeback in 1978 for the television movie Born Again. He was married six times, most notably to actresses Ruth Chatterton and Ann Sheridan. He had two children with his fifth wife, Janet Michaels. He died of emphysema in 1979 at his home in Solana Beach, California. He was buried at Holy Cross Cemetery in Culver City, California. He has a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame for his contribution to motion pictures.
