Alphie McCourt

Alphie McCourt was an Irish-American writer and the youngest brother of Frank McCourt, the author of Angela's Ashes. He was born in Limerick, Ireland, in 1940, and moved to the United States in 1958, following his brothers. He worked as a bartender, a salesman, a teacher, and a civil servant, before publishing his memoir, A Long Stone's Throw, in 2008. The book recounts his childhood in Ireland, his immigration to America, his struggles with alcoholism, and his search for identity and belonging. He also wrote a collection of short stories, Heartscald, and contributed to several anthologies and magazines. He was married to Diana Glazer, a psychotherapist, and had two daughters, Allison and Siobhan. He died of melanoma in 2016, at the age of 75.
