Carl Heinrich Bloch

Carl Heinrich Bloch was a Danish realist painter, who was born on May 23, 1834, in Copenhagen. He studied at the Royal Danish Academy of Art under Wilhelm Marstrand, and received a travel grant in 1859. He visited the Netherlands, France, and Italy, where he became fascinated by the works of Rembrandt. He returned to Denmark in 1868, after his father's death, and continued his workshop. He became a professor at the Royal Danish Academy of Art and served as its director from 1883 to 1888. He painted many scenes from the life of Christ, which are displayed in the King's Chapel at Frederiksborg Palace. He also painted portraits, landscapes, and historical subjects. He died of cancer on February 22, 1890, in Copenhagen. He is regarded as one of the most important Danish artists of his time and his works are widely admired and reproduced.
