About me / Bio:
Ivan Aivazovsky was born into an Armenian family in the Black Sea port of Feodosia in Crimea. He showed an early talent for drawing and painting, and was admitted to the Imperial Academy of Arts in Saint Petersburg at the age of 18. He studied under the guidance of Maxim Vorobiev, a prominent landscape painter, and graduated with a gold medal in 1839. He then traveled to Europe and lived briefly in Italy, where he was influenced by the works of the Old Masters and the Italian scenery. He returned to Russia in 1844 and was appointed the main painter of the Russian Navy. He also became a member of the Academy of Arts and received numerous awards and honors for his paintings. He had close ties with the military and political elite of the Russian Empire and often attended naval maneuvers and battles. He painted many scenes of naval glory and historical events, as well as portraits of prominent figures. He was especially admired by Tsar Nicholas I, who commissioned him to paint a series of views of the Bosphorus. Aivazovsky was also a patriot of his homeland, Crimea, and of his Armenian heritage. He supported the Armenian community in various ways, such as donating money, building churches and schools, and helping refugees. He also painted many Armenian themes, such as the Armenian Genocide, the Siege of Van, and the ancient Armenian capital of Ani. He founded an art school and a gallery in Feodosia, where he spent most of his life. He also built a historical museum and initiated archaeological expeditions in Crimea. He was a prolific artist, who created around 6,000 paintings in his career, mostly seascapes. He was renowned for his ability to capture the movement and light of the water, as well as the atmospheric effects of the sky and the weather. He was a master of color and composition, and used a variety of techniques to create realistic and dramatic effects. He was influenced by the Romantic movement, but also developed his own style that was admired by many artists and critics. He was one of the most popular and successful Russian artists of his time, and his works were widely exhibited and sold in Europe and the United States. He died of heart failure in 1900, at the age of 82, and was buried in the St. Sargis Armenian Church in Feodosia. His legacy as a painter of the sea and a benefactor of his people is still celebrated today.
