Ramses V

Ramses V was the fourth pharaoh of the 20th dynasty of Egypt and the son of Ramses IV and Duatentopet. He reigned for about five years, during which he faced the growing power of the priesthood of Amun, the threat of Libyan raiders, and a financial scandal involving the priests of Elephantine. He died relatively young, possibly of smallpox, as his mummy shows signs of the disease. He was also wounded in the head, either before or after his death, suggesting an assassination attempt. He was buried in the tomb KV9, which he had originally started for his father, but his mummy was later moved to another location by the priests. He continued the construction of his father’s temple at Dayr al-Bahri, which probably became his own funerary monument. He was succeeded by his uncle Ramses VI, who usurped his monuments and inscriptions.
