Paul of Thebes was an Egyptian saint who is regarded as the first Christian hermit. He fled to the Theban desert during the persecution of Christians under the Roman emperor Decius. He lived in a cave for about 90 years, surviving on dates, bread, and water brought by a raven. He met St. Anthony the Great, another famous hermit, shortly before his death. He is venerated by the Catholic Church, the Eastern Orthodox Churches, the Oriental Orthodox Churches, and the Anglican Communion. He is often depicted with two lions, a palm tree, and a raven.
