About me / Bio:
Philo of Alexandria was a Greek-speaking Jewish philosopher who lived in Alexandria, Egypt, in the Roman province of Egypt. He was a leading figure of Hellenistic Judaism, a movement that sought to adapt Jewish religious traditions to the cultural and intellectual environment of the Hellenistic world. Philo was influenced by Platonic and Stoic philosophy, and he tried to show the compatibility and harmony of Jewish scriptures, especially the Torah, with Greek rationality. He used allegorical methods to interpret the literal meaning of the biblical texts, and he developed a complex theological system that incorporated concepts such as the Logos, the divine Word that mediates between God and the world. Philo also wrote extensively on ethical and political topics, such as the nature of the human soul, the virtues and vices, the role of law and justice, and the duties of rulers and citizens. Philo was also an active participant in the Jewish community of Alexandria, and he represented the interests of his coreligionists in his dealings with the Roman authorities. He was part of a delegation that went to Rome in 40 CE to appeal to the emperor Caligula against the persecution and discrimination that the Jews faced in Alexandria. Philo also visited Jerusalem at least once in his lifetime, and he expressed his reverence for the Temple and the Jewish rituals. Philo’s works were preserved and transmitted by the early Christian writers, who regarded him as an authoritative source of Jewish wisdom and a precursor of Christian theology. Philo’s influence can be seen in the writings of Clement of Alexandria, Origen, Eusebius, and Jerome, among others. Philo’s legacy also extends to later Jewish and Islamic thinkers, such as Philo the Arab, Maimonides, and Ibn Gabirol, who were inspired by his philosophical and mystical ideas.
