Mário Covas was a Brazilian politician and engineer who served as the governor of São Paulo from 1995 to 2001. He was also a senator, a mayor of São Paulo City, and a federal representative. He was a founder and member of the Brazilian Social Democracy Party (PSDB). He ran for president in 1989, but received only 11% of the votes. He was diagnosed with bladder cancer in 2000 and took a medical leave of absence in 2001. He died later that year, and was succeeded by his deputy, Geraldo Alckmin. He was known for his honesty, integrity, and social commitment. He implemented several public policies in the areas of education, health, transportation, environment, and public security. He was also a defender of democracy and human rights. He was awarded several honors and distinctions, such as the Order of Merit, the Order of Military Merit, and the Order of Prince Henry. He was married to Lila Covas, who was also a politician and social activist. They had three children and several grandchildren. One of his grandsons, Bruno Covas, is the current mayor of São Paulo.
