Ana Carolina Reston Macan was a Brazilian model who died of complications from anorexia nervosa at the age of 21. She began her modeling career at the age of 13, after winning a local beauty contest in her hometown. She worked for prestigious brands such as Giorgio Armani and Dior, and traveled to countries such as China, Turkey, Mexico, and Japan. She was reportedly told that she was 'too fat' during a casting call in China, which triggered her eating disorder. She followed a diet of only apples and tomatoes, and weighed only 40 kg (88 lbs) at the time of her death. Her body mass index was 14.1, well below the normal range. She was hospitalized for kidney malfunction in October 2006, and died a month later from a generalized infection. Her death sparked a debate about the fashion industry's standards of beauty and the health of models.
