Chitra Dewi was an Indonesian actress and director who started her career in her teens. She rose to fame after starring in Usmar Ismail's films of the 1950s, such as Tamu Agung (Exalted Guest, 1955), Tiga Dara (Three Maidens, 1956), and Pedjuang (Warriors for Freedom, 1960). She also appeared in more than a hundred other films, as well as several television shows. She was best known for her role as Lela in the long-running series Si Doel Anak Sekolahan (Doel the Schoolchild, 1994-2005), which depicted the life of a Betawi family in Jakarta. She was regarded as one of the most versatile and prolific actresses in Indonesian cinema, and received several awards and honors for her contributions. She died at the age of 78 in 2008, after suffering from glaucoma and losing her eyesight. She was buried with her mother in Jabang Bayi Cemetery, Cirebon.
