Yuh Woon-Hyung

Yuh Woon-Hyung was a Korean politician and reunification activist who played a key role in the establishment of the Provisional Government of the Republic of Korea in 1919. He was also one of the founders of the Committee for Preparation of Korean Independence, which declared the independence of Korea on August 15, 1945, after the liberation from Japanese colonial rule. He became the chairman of the National People's Representative Conference, a provisional legislative body that aimed to establish a democratic and unified government for Korea. He advocated for cooperation and dialogue with the Soviet-backed North Korea, and opposed the separate elections and the trusteeship plan proposed by the United States. He formed the Korean Democratic Party, which was the main opposition party to the conservative and pro-American faction led by Syngman Rhee. He also organized various social and cultural movements, such as the Korean National Youth Association and the Korean National Council, to promote national unity and education. He was assassinated by a right-wing extremist on July 19, 1947, in Seoul. He is widely regarded as a martyr and a pioneer of democracy and peace in Korea. He is also known by his pen name Mongyang, which means "dreaming of the sun".
