Jeong Seung-hwa was a South Korean general officer who served as the 22nd Republic of Korea Army Chief of Staff. He was present at the Blue House presidential compound, site of the assassination of President Park Chung-hee, when it took place on 26 October 1979. He was the chief martial law administrator after Park's death and tried to exclude political soldiers such as the Hanahoe, an influential group of South Korean military officers. However, he was arrested by the members of the Hanahoe, led by Chun Doo-hwan and Roh Tae-woo, on suspicion of involvement in the assassination of Park. He was reduced in rank to private and sentenced to life imprisonment. He was cleared of any involvement in the death of Park by the Seoul District Court in 1997 and restored to his general officer rank. He died on 12 June 2002 in Seoul.
