Fakih Usman

Fakih Usman was an influential Islamic leader and politician in Indonesia. He was a prominent member of the Muhammadiyah, a modernist Islamic organization that advocated for social reforms and education. He served as the chairman of the Muhammadiyah from 1968 until his death. He was also a member of the Masyumi Party, a political party that represented the interests of the Islamic community. He was elected as a member of the People's Representative Council and the Constitutional Assembly, representing West Java. He also held the position of Minister of Religious Affairs twice, under the cabinets of Abdul Halim and Wilopo. As minister, he oversaw the development of Islamic institutions and education, as well as the promotion of religious harmony and tolerance. He was known for his moderate and progressive views on Islam, as well as his dedication to the Indonesian independence movement. He died in 1968 at the age of 64. He was buried in his hometown of Gresik, where a street was named after him. He is remembered as one of the most influential and respected figures in the history of Indonesian Islam.
