Jeong Seon

Jeong Seon was a Korean painter who pioneered the true-view landscape painting style in the Joseon period. He was born into a noble family, but his family was poor and he could not pursue a scholarly career. He was introduced to the court painting bureau by his influential neighbors and became a painter for the royal family and the aristocracy. He also served as a local magistrate and a professor at the office for observing natural phenomena. He was proficient in the Book of Changes and astronomy. He traveled extensively to various scenic spots in Korea, especially Mt. Geumgang, which he painted more than 100 times. He developed a realistic and expressive style of depicting the native landscapes, breaking away from the conventional Chinese models. He used fine and bold brushstrokes, bright colors, and dynamic compositions to capture the essence and spirit of the natural scenery. He also painted historical and literary scenes, as well as portraits and genre paintings. He was honored by King Yeongjo, who bestowed on him official titles and ranks. He died at the age of 83 in his hometown of Cheongun-dong. He is regarded as one of the most famous and influential Korean painters, and his works are national treasures. He inspired many later artists to follow his true-view style and to appreciate the beauty of Korea.
