Benyamin Sueb

Benyamin Sueb was an Indonesian comedian, actor and singer who was one of the most popular entertainers in Indonesia. He released 46 studio albums and starred in more than 50 films, many of which he also directed and produced. He received two Citra Awards for Best Leading Actor for his roles in Intan Berduri (1973) and Si Doel Anak Modern (1975). He was also known for his musical comedy and his collaboration with singer Ida Royani. He was influenced by various genres of music, such as calypso, jazz, blues, rock and roll, and traditional Indonesian music. He used music as a medium of social criticism and satire, often portraying the lives of the urban poor and the marginalized. He also contributed to the development of Betawi culture, especially the Gambang Kromong musical style. He died of a heart attack on September 5, 1995, at the age of 56. He was buried at the Karet Bivak Cemetery in Jakarta. He is widely regarded as one of the greatest Indonesian artists of all time.
