Shuba Jay

Shuba Jay was a Malaysian actress, businesswoman and entrepreneur who died in the 2014 Malaysia Airlines Flight 17 crash. She was born on 15 July 1976 to Jeyaratnam and Shanthi, who were of Indian Tamil descent. She graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in Communications and worked as a copywriter for the New Straits Times before pursuing a career in acting. She became known for her roles in TV shows such as Spanar Jaya, Gadis 3 and Sugumana Sumaigal, and films such as Relationship Status and Tokak. She also performed on stage in Fourplay, Charley's Auntie and Hungry for Hope. She was recognised by Prestige Magazine as one of Malaysia's top 40 individuals under the age of 40. She married Paul Goes, a Dutch national, in 2010 and gave birth to their daughter Kaela at home in 2012. She was a vocal supporter of breastfeeding and home birthing, and shared her experience in local media. She also participated in the 15Malaysia project, a series of short films on various socio-political themes, and the reality TV show Mari Menari with her father. She and her family were on board the Malaysia Airlines Flight 17 when it was shot down on 17 July 2014, killing all people on board. She was 38 years old. Her death shocked and saddened many local actors and film directors, who paid tribute to her talent and personality. Her funeral rites were conducted at the Nirvana Memorial Centre on 2 September 2014.
