About me / Bio:
Wuzhun Shifan was a Zen Buddhist monk who lived during the late Song Dynasty (960-1279). He was born in Zitong, Sichuan province, China, and grew up in an intellectual family. His grandfather was a noted ink-wash painter and his father was an expert in poetry and calligraphy. Wuzhun studied Buddhism under various masters and became the abbot of several temples, including the Wanshou Temple at Mount Jing. He was also a renowned calligrapher, painter, and teacher. He was summoned by Emperor Lizong of Song in 1233 to share with him the doctrine of Zen Buddhism, and was given the title of Mirror of the Buddha, Zen Teacher. He also received a gold-embroidered robe that he wears in his portrait painting of 1238. He had many disciples who studied under him, including some who brought his teachings to Japan. He was influential in the development of Zen art and culture in both China and Japan. He died in 1249 at the age of 71. His portrait, along with some of his calligraphy and paintings, are preserved as national treasures in Japan.
