About me / Bio:

Xu Shichang was a Chinese politician and diplomat who served as the president of the Republic of China from 1918 to 1922. He was a close friend and supporter of Yuan Shikai, the first president of the republic, and held various positions in his government, including premier and foreign minister. He was elected as president after Yuan's death, with the backing of the Anhui clique of the Beiyang Army. He faced many challenges during his presidency, such as the May Fourth Movement, the Warlord Era, and the rise of the Kuomintang. He tried to reform the financial system and improve the foreign relations of China, but his efforts were hampered by the lack of central authority and the interference of the warlords. He resigned in 1922 after the Zhili–Anhui War, and lived in retirement until his death in 1939. He was posthumously honored as a national hero by the Nationalist government.
