Ahmed II

Ahmed II was the sultan of the Ottoman Empire from 1691 to 1695. He was the son of Sultan Ibrahim and Muazzez Sultan. He spent most of his life in the Kafes, a prison for the imperial princes, until he was chosen as the successor of his brother Suleiman II. His reign was marked by the continuing war with the Holy League (Austria-Poland-Venice), which had started during the reign of his brother Mehmed IV. He faced several defeats by the Austrians, such as the Battle of Slankamen in 1691, but also some victories, such as the recapture of Belgrade in 1690. He relied heavily on the able grand vizier Köprülüzade Fazıl Mustafa Pasha, who reformed the tax system and the army, and tried to restore the Ottoman prestige and power. Ahmed II was also interested in literature and patronized poets and scholars. He died of natural causes in 1695 and was buried in the Süleymaniye Mosque in Istanbul. He was succeeded by his nephew Mustafa II.
