Enver Pasha

Enver Pasha was a prominent leader of the Young Turk Revolution of 1908, which restored the constitutional monarchy in the Ottoman Empire. He became the minister of war and the de facto commander-in-chief of the Ottoman army in 1914, and formed a dictatorial triumvirate with Talaat Pasha and Cemal Pasha. He was the main architect of the Ottoman-German alliance in World War I, and pursued his pan-Turkic ambitions by launching several campaigns against the Russian and British forces. He was also responsible for the Armenian Genocide, the mass deportation and killing of Armenians in the Ottoman Empire, along with the Greek Genocide. After the Ottoman defeat in 1918, he fled to Germany and was sentenced to death in absentia by the Ottoman Military Tribunal. He later joined the Basmachi Revolt, a Muslim uprising against the Bolsheviks in Central Asia, where he was killed in a battle in 1922. He was buried in Tajikistan, but his remains were reburied in Turkey in 1996. He is regarded as a national hero by some Turkish nationalists, but as a war criminal by Armenians and other ethnic groups.
