Tanjore Ramachandra Anantharaman

Tanjore Ramachandra Anantharaman was one of India's pre-eminent metallurgists and materials scientists, who made pioneering contributions to the field of rapidly solidified alloys and metallic glasses. He was also a distinguished teacher, researcher, and administrator, who served in various positions at the Indian Institute of Science, Banaras Hindu University, Thapar Institute of Engineering and Technology, and National Physical Laboratory. He received many national and international awards and honors for his scientific achievements, including the Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Prize, the D.Sc. degree from Oxford University, the Lifetime Achievement Award in Metallurgy from the Indian Union Ministry of Steel and Mines, and the Fellowship of the Indian National Science Academy. He was also a Rhodes Scholar and a Nuffield Scholar. He was interested in spirituality, philosophy, and religion, especially the Vedic and Yogic traditions of India. He started a Millennium Movement in 2001 from his Ashram Atmadeep in Gurgaon, Haryana, to spread the message of these traditions. He passed away on 19 June 2009 at the age of 81 due to cardiac arrest.
