About me / Bio:
Wilhelm Furtwängler was a German conductor and composer who is widely regarded as one of the greatest symphonic and operatic conductors of the 20th century. He was a major influence for many later conductors, and his name is often mentioned when discussing their interpretative styles. He was known for his passionate, romantic, and expressive approach to music, especially the works of Ludwig van Beethoven and Richard Wagner. Furtwängler was born in Berlin on 25 January 1886, into a family of scholars and musicians. His father was an archaeologist and professor, and his mother was a painter and pianist. He showed an early talent for music and began composing at the age of seven. He studied music in Munich, where he was assistant to the conductor Felix Mottl at the Court Opera. He made his debut as a conductor in 1906 at the Breslau Stadttheater, and soon became a sought-after guest conductor in Germany and abroad. In 1922, he became the principal conductor of the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra, a position he held until 1945, with a brief interruption from 1924 to 1925 when he was the director of the Gewandhaus Orchestra in Leipzig. He also conducted regularly at the Bayreuth Festival, where he was revered as a master of Wagner's music. He was also a prolific composer, writing symphonies, concertos, chamber music, choral works, and operas. Furtwängler's career was marked by controversy due to his decision to remain in Germany during the Nazi regime. Although he was not a member of the Nazi Party and openly opposed antisemitism, he was accused of collaborating with the Nazis and lending prestige to their propaganda. He defended himself by saying that he wanted to preserve German culture and protect his musicians from persecution. He also helped many Jewish musicians and artists to escape or survive the Nazi terror. After World War II, he was initially banned from conducting by the Allies, but was later cleared of any wrongdoing and resumed his career. Furtwängler died on 30 November 1954 of pneumonia, in Baden-Baden. He was buried in Heidelberg cemetery, in his mother's vault. A large number of personalities from the artistic and political world were present at his funeral, including Chancellor Konrad Adenauer. His legacy lives on through his recordings and compositions, which are still admired and studied by musicians and music lovers around the world.
