About me / Bio:
Avelina Carrera was a Spanish soprano who was widely acclaimed for her performances at the Gran Teatro del Liceo in Barcelona. She made her debut there in 1889 as Elsa in Wagner's Lohengrin, replacing an indisposed singer and receiving enthusiastic reviews. She sang a variety of roles, but was especially admired for her Wagnerian repertoire. She also appeared in Italy, Portugal, Latin America, and other countries. She created the role of Maddalena in the world premiere of Giordano's Andrea Chénier at La Scala in 1896, alongside Giuseppe Borgatti. She retired from the stage in 1910 and became a voice teacher in Barcelona. She died in 1939 at the age of 68. Her legacy lives on through her recordings and her students.
